"Tsukishima Monja Moheji is a restaurant dedicated to serving monjayaki, a signature dish of Tokyo’s downtown neighborhoods, in its authentic form. First created in Asakusa during the Edo period and later nurtured in Tsukishima from the Showa era onward, monja is one of the few dishes that can truly be called native to Tokyo. It is also deeply tied to the roots of our founder, who was born in Tsukiji and raised in Tsukishima. We carry on this tradition while sharing it with a wider audience. The charm of monja lies in the way it engages all five senses. The sound of sizzling ingredients on the iron grill, the rising steam and savory aroma, the sight of seasonal seafood prepared before your eyes, and the taste of each piping-hot bite—combined with the warmth of downtown-style hospitality—create a dining experience that is lively, memorable, and deeply rooted in Tokyo’s food culture. At the heart of the flavor is our house-made dashi. It is crafted with dried seafood carefully sourced from across Japan, blended with chicken stock and aromatic vegetables to create a broth rich in depth and umami. We work closely with a seafood wholesaler based in Toyosu that has been in operation since 1871. With 154 years of history in Tsukiji and Toyosu—the world’s largest fish market—this trusted wholesaler provides Moheji with exceptional seafood that is not easily found in ordinary restaurants. The interior reflects a sense of traditional Japan, with indigo-dyed curtains, white plaster walls, and vintage Showa-era glasswork. Dishes are served on tableware decorated with striking indigo patterns, while staff handle the teppan cooking so guests can simply relax and enjoy their meal. “The authentic tradition of Tsukishima.” — Guided by these words, Moheji continues to refine both its monjayaki and its spirit of hospitality.
